I’m glad that even though I did not join a spiritual community in college, I was lucky enough that God gave me the grace to get back in one after graduation. I would definitely agree that the majority of “Catholics” who do not join such a community fall away from the Church. Even though I am back, it is still an uphill battle.

PS. Being Catholic and Christian are not mutually exclusive. I think you mean being Catholic or Protestant

Here's a clip of his reunion with his mom and an interview with both of them. I was very intrigued by their relationship. There's a lot of sweetness, but there also seems to be undercurrents of past hurt, bitterness, and expectation.

Maybe it's just me, but it's kinda nice that Johnson is at least sorta consistent. Athletes/celebrities thanking God whenever they win an award has become quite cliched. I came across this video which makes fun of this point. Hope people aren't offended by it =P

Colin, I do agree with you that the most pastoral thing you can do is to tell people the truth. However, it’s hard for me to say necessarily that this instance is the other extreme of fire and brimstone.

I’m somewhat familiar with the Marin Foundation and have been reading through Andrew Marin’s book, Love is an Orientation. He has some good things to say, but I know there’s also some controversy with him. The blog post doesn’t seem to make a definitive statement in terms of accepting the lifestyle and I might be reading too much between the lines, but it seemed to me to be more about apologizing for ways Christians have been unloving in the past though what that means to each party is likely different =P.

I guess the hard line is to figure out is how to tell people with truth AND grace. Jesus, as usual, was the master at this. I just wish I was better at figuring out what he would do in these situations =).

After reading the full post, this seems like the other extreme of the fire and brimstone approach. Not only should we accept the homosexual lifestyle but we should also apologize for ever saying it was immoral and disordered.

Obviously we need to avoid an extreme of bashing people over the head but there must be a pastoral way of telling people in sin the truth. This, sadly, does much more harm than good. The most pastoral thing you can do is to tell people the truth.

It’s similar to abortion. When a woman comes in seeking healing for a past abortion, the LAST thing you do is tell them it was not a big deal. They have been wounded for the last however many years from what they have done, whether they were culpable or not, and they need to know that it was wrong and God willingly gives His forgiveness and mercy.

OOH I really liked this entry. i think her entry really shows how society shapes what’s a good person and what’s a bad person.
For me, going to CM and learning that God is Truth (and not just some old “the sky is blue” or “i have ten fingers” truth) was extremely meaningful to me.

Have you read Jeff Cavins’ book “I’m Not Being Fed!”? I just got his book “My Life on the Rock” which is his own personal story about leaving the Church and then finding his way back, but I think from what I’ve heard about “I’m Not Being Fed!” he addresses what you’re talking about to the T.

It’s not that Abstinence education does not work, but it cannot work in a society with so much sex all around us. The problem is not abstinence, it’s our obsession with sex. Opponents of AOE cannot say it does not work, because we have not tried to make it work.
